We Solved a Murder Using Only Our Voices

Apartment 4B case file — a free locked-room case from Murder Mystery For 2

Can you solve a murder using only your voices? Yes — and for mystery fans it's the purest way to play. Voice-Only mode hides each player's evidence board from the other, so every clue has to be described, questioned and pinned out loud. Below is how a typical playthrough unfolds (without naming the killer), and why talking makes you a better detective.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Voice-Only mode hides your partner's board; every connection has to be explained aloud.
  • Saying a clue out loud forces you to state the inference, not just the fact — that's where mistakes surface.
  • Good voice teams use a simple protocol: describe, ask, commit.
  • Voice-Only mode and in-game voice come with a pass; one plan covers both players.

How does a Voice-Only case actually play?

It plays in three movements. First, both players read their own files in silence — the Detective takes the scene and the lab, the Profiler takes the interviews and phone records. Then comes the exchange, where each player describes their strongest clues. Finally, both build their own boards and must agree on one accusation without ever seeing the other's connections.

What happened in our Apartment 4B playthrough?

Minute 0–6: the reading. The Detective found the door chain and the new lock cylinder; the Profiler found a neighbour's statement about an argument the week before.

Minute 6–14: the exchange. The turning point was a question, not a clue. The Profiler asked: "Who could even get in once the lock was changed?" The Detective had the answer in the scene notes and hadn't thought it mattered. Spoken aloud, it clicked for both of them.

Minute 14–22: the accusation. Each built a board blind. The scoring rewarded the pairs of connections they'd agreed on in conversation — and penalised the one connection the Detective pinned on a hunch without saying it out loud.

Why does talking make you a better detective?

Because a clue you say out loud has to become a sentence with a "because" in it. Reading silently, it's easy to note "lock was changed" and move on. Explaining it to a partner, you end up saying "the lock was changed, so only whoever holds the new key could have…" — and the inference is now on the table, where your partner can test it. Classic detective fiction is built on this: Holmes explains to Watson, Poirot to Hastings. Voice-Only mode turns the reader into both.

What's the best way to communicate in Voice-Only mode?

  1. Describe: say the exhibit's name, what it shows and why you think it matters.
  2. Ask: "Does anything on your side explain this?" — the question unlocks the other half.
  3. Commit: agree aloud on each connection before pinning it; disagreements become hints.
  4. Read the time-stamps: call logs and gate logs settle more arguments than motives do.

Frequently asked questions

What is Voice-Only mode?

A live two-player mode where you can't see your partner's evidence board. You read different evidence, describe it out loud and build your boards separately, then agree on one accusation.

Is Voice-Only mode harder than normal co-op?

Yes. Without the shared board, every connection has to be explained in words, so it rewards clear communication more than fast reading.

Which case should we try first?

Apartment 4B — an easy locked-room case that takes 15–25 minutes and is always free.

What do we need to play Voice-Only?

Two devices with a browser and a microphone, plus a 24-hour pass or lifetime unlock for one of you — one plan covers both players and includes the built-in voice chat.
